July-Week 3

I am researching how Environmental Engineering can be applied to the environmental issues in Puerto Rico to help minimize them and prevent future damage. Puerto Rico Paradise Plagued with Pollution lists the plethora of problems with Puerto Rico, a commonwealth of the United States. It lists the major environmental concerns for the island such as, the closing of multiple beaches due to pollution by human waste, and the critical water supply reservoirs that are diminishing due to erosion. “On September 29, 2010, the EPA approved a list of 593 instances in which a pollutant caused impairment in the PR water body that keeps it from supporting its designated use for drinking water, swimming and recreation, fishing, or other activities specified by the commonwealth.” This quote pertains to my research question because it addresses how bodies of water in Puerto Rico are being wasted away instead of being utilized. Puerto Rico is a small island home to a diverse group of people, without freshwater civilization there would slowly dwindle away.
