Aubrey Week 13

Hope For Haiti

This article talks about an event that was created to raise funds for disaster relief after the terrible earthquake struck Haiti. Many different celebrities arranged a benefit concert and phone-a-thon. George Clooney was the host of this event and many well-known artists performed in the concert. They sang different songs as a tribute for the for the Hope for Haiti foundation. This event is an example of one that uses celebrities our well known figures to help raise funds. I liked this source because I thought it was going to a great cause but also because I saw this event on TV and thought they did a wonderful job with putting it together.

Aubrey Week 12

Relay for Life

Even though most people have heard about Relay for Life, I thought it would be a good source to talk about because it is a perfect example of a foundation creating an event where all the funds go towards a certain cause. Relay for Life is an event organized by the American Cancer Society in which different groups and organizations come together and camp out and walk about a track in the "walk for life." I have participated in many Relay for Life events and it was such an enriching experience. I chose to talk about this source because as a walker, you can see first hand where your money is going and talk to some survivors. American Cancer Society works hard to make this a great event and has changed the lives of millions.

Aubrey Week 11

New Global Citizens

New Global Citizens is a foundation that is based off of student run projects around the country. Students get together and create fundraisers in their community. When they have the funds that they need to make their projects successful, the students go and physically help those in need. Whether it be going on a mission trip or going to clean up a school, there a kids all over the country working to make a difference. I really liked this source because it showed a different perspective of a way to help. I like this foundation because they perform hands on activities to help others.

Aubrey Week 10

Children's Investment Fund Foundation

"The Children's Investment Fund Foundation aims to demonstrably improve the lives of children living in poverty in developing countries by achieving large-scale, sustainable impact" (CIFF UK). I really liked this source because this foundation has an aim to help many different subject areas such as child survival, hunger alleviation and nutrition, educational achievement and economic development. These are just a few of the goals they have set for their foundation. They believe that every child deserves to survive in a safe environment and they will do anything to make that happen. "Our hope is that CIFF's journey will be useful for all who aim to make development more impactful".

Aubrey Week 8

I feel that this website and article is a good source for my paper because it talks about a foundation that raises money all over the country so that they can build clean water wells in third world countries. This company organizes large events in New York, Chicago and California. These events include galas and banquets with many celebrities involved and usually featured in "People" magazine. I really liked this source because it shows the depth that this company goes into to make their foundation a success. Aside from the events, they have a campaign going that is an interactive system where people all over the country can donate right on the website and in time they will be able to see pictures video of exactly where their money is going.

The CDC is the website for the Center for Disease Control and their website provides many facts and statistics that will aid you in writing your paper. It also provides examples of ways to prevent childhood obesity.

Week 7: Aubrey

http://www.cff.org/aboutCFFoundation/NewsEvents/2011NewsArchive/11-29-Great-Strides-Stories-Macis-Miracle-Miles.cfm

I think that this article is good for my topic because it talks about an event held by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation called Great Strides. Great Strides is a 5K walk with efforts to raise money for a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. This event is similar to Relay for Life in that they are taking steps towards finding a cure for a serious illness. They raise money all year leading up to the event and take pledges and it is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest national fundraiser. This article talks about one little girl who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis and how Great Strides has helped her and her experience at the walk. I feel like this article is good for me because it talks about a non-profit organization that hosts an event in order to raise funds for research and plans to make a difference in the community.

Week 7: For July

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21956337

I think this article will be good for you because it talks about a recent event that has directly affected Puerto Rico. This article talks about how different companies reacted to this event.

Aubrey: Week Six

The Everychild Foundation

I believe that this database is a good source for me to use because it provides a full and complete description of The Everychild Foundation. The Everychild Foundation has a mission to help youth who are suffering from disease, abuse, poverty and so on. The Everychild Foundation works hard to create an executive board who organizes project grants to help schools and educational facilities. There is a very extensive process to choose which program they will award the grant to. Their mission is to encourage students to stay in school and finish the education they need. Also, they try to encourage the community to spread the movement around the country, not just in one location. I like this database and the foundation because they are a philanthropy that uses hands on activities and efforts to make a difference in the lives of youth. The Everychild Foundation is a great organization that strives to maintain the education of the youth of America.

Sydnie: Week 12

http://www.livestrong.com/article/517636-homecooked-meals-vs-fast-food-meals/

Home cooked meals are obviously healthier than fast food. Fast foods are typically higher in calories, saturated fat, sodium, and sugars. However, regardless of fast foods being unhealthy, people continue to eat. Why? Because of the fast paced schedule that consume our daily lives. Although home cooked meals take more time to make, it is still much cheaper than fast food. Also, the food is fresh and free of any contaminants. Eating out all the time significantly elevates the risks of health problems and obesity. In a recent study, participants who ate fast food more than twice a week gained about 4.5 kg and were twice more resistant to insulin. Fast food meals also differ from home cooked meals in terms of serving sizes. Compared to eating at home, serving sizes in a restaurant are twice the size of what is considered normal in the household. Therefore, eating at home is way more beneficial than eating fast food.
